In the original series episode "The Duplicate Man", a duplicate is an artificial copy of a being. They share the original's appearance and memories. However additional memories or skills can be programmed. Their creation is monitored by the Federal Duplication Bureau. It's stated there have been incidents of duplicates killing the original. Henderson James had one created to hunt down an escaped Megasoid. It consequentially attempted to kill him and take his place.
