A chemical war leaves most of humanity unable to reproduce. Only rare couples, such as Sherry and Tim McAllister, are able to have healthy, normal children. By conceiving, they become the focus of intense attention from the government and slowly realize how important the pregnancy is to the government, and how far it will go to get what it wants.

Opening narration[]

Every child born is linked in a chain to generations past and future. But what happens when that chain is snapped?

Plot[]

Darkrain1

School entrance during the last day of its service.

At a top-secret government meeting of the Federal Medical Emergency Agency, a quickly spreading fertility disease is being discussed. It is obvious that the disease is caused by theradoxine, a new chemical which distributes during a dark rain on the whole Earth. Dr. Golding claims that the chemical is a product of a chemical reaction between chemical weapons but the leader, being afraid of losing political power, doesn't want her to reveal anything and does his best to impugn their claims as well as to prevent her from revelation. Their dispute ends in Dr. Golding voluntary resignation, and the leader entrusts her opponent, Dr. Clayton Royce, to form and lead the Federal Reproductive Board, while she slowly leaves the room.

Ten years after the meeting, Sherry McAllister, a teacher, has to pass the last class with her students. Those ale the last children because since the dark rain all newborns were mutants and died before birth or soon after it. She says goodbye to them and hands around the applications to the Reproductive board. Despite own disbelief to the project, she tries to persuade them that it will help to restore the human population.

At the evening, Sherry and her husband, Tim, watch TV report about an alleged terrorist organization, New World Army (NWA), which is accusing the government of this catastrophe. Tim then turns it off and the couple makes love. Later during a night, Sherry suffers stomach problems and nausea so the McAllisters decide to visit the hospital. In the morning, Golding appears as a doctor and assures the shocked couple that their baby, by all accounts, will born healthy and without mutations. The couple is confused but doesn't have much time to discuss because Royce and his team accompanied by two soldiers invades the hospital. Royce then gently forces the couple to leave with him.

After a long ride in an ambulance, the two find themselves in a secret maternity hospital. Royce is continuously affirming that the baby is perfect and that his birth will be all right, but Sherry meets a couple of ill mothers and becomes a witness of an unsuccessful delivery. However, after a few months, the baby is actually born healthy and without complications. Nevertheless, the joy is spoiled immediately as Royce carries the baby away and even does not let the parents to see their baby. The McAllisters are truly horrified when they find that Dr. Royce has hidden designs on their newborn son, as he intends him to be a permanent ward of the state.

A few days later, Sherry wakes up to see one of the paramedics staying in front of their bed. He explains that he is a member of NWA and offers them freedom. The couple nods, recovers its son and escapes the complex in a pair of coffins instead of two mothers who died last day. After a couple of hours travelling in trucks and then on feet, they finally arrive to the settlement and meet many healthy kids playing there. They also reunite with Golding who explains them that NWA is creating a new civilization, while their military activities are conducted only to divert attention of the government.
